What is the Project?

The City will be constructing a new substation to accommodate the growing electrical demands in the southwest area of Medicine Hat and the surrounding area.

Why do we need this Project?

The Project addresses the increasing demand for electricity and supports the development of important community infrastructure, such as housing, schools, recreation facilities, and commercial establishments, which would otherwise be limited without enhancements to the electrical system in the south.

What is new about this Project?

On April 25, 2025, the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) issued a Decision regarding the Medicine Hat Southwest Substation (Proceeding #29734). The Decision grants approval for the construction and operation of the project at the location previously identified as the Preferred Site.

Construction is slated to begin in the fall of 2025. You may see equipment at site and if you have any questions or concerns regarding these activities, we ask you to contact our project team.

The anticipated in-service date is early 2027.

What might the Project look like?

The City of Medicine Hat has renderings of the approved Medicine Hat Southwest Substation. These renderings are designed to assist with understanding how the proposed project may look on the landscape from three separate viewpoints.
