What is the Project:

The City is proposing a new substation to accommodate the growth and increasing electrical needs in the southwest area of the city and the city’s electric service territory.

Why do we need this project:

The Project is needed to address the increasing demand for electricity and to support the development of important community infrastructure, such as housing, schools, recreation facilities, and commercial establishments, which would otherwise be limited without enhancements to the electrical system in the south.

What is new about this Project:

The City has narrowed down the planned substation location to two potential sites, a preferred and an alternate. These sites were identified by assessing a number of criteria, including community feedback, environmental impacts, visual impacts, agricultural impacts, engineering considerations, and costs. Each of these sites are suitable for housing a substation and may be submitted to the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) for review and approval. Although the City may submit two substation site options, only the AUC approved site would be constructed.

How can you get involved?

Prior to applying to the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) before the end of 2024, the Project team is seeking to understand additional considerations, solutions for any potential negative impacts, and community preferences for sites and proposed connections to the existing transmission line (20L).

The project team may adjust site designs and develop mitigation plans based on the feedback collected. It is anticipated that both sites will be provided to the AUC for consideration with only the approved site being constructed.
