Medicine Hat: A Different Kind of Energy
Medicine Hat. Alberta.
There's a spirit here that's hard to explain. Unmistakable when experienced.
At the heart of our community lies a different kind of energy, a pulse that sets us apart and makes us PROUD to be Hatters.
Ours is a community that is built differently.
Our resolve is carved from the banks of the South Saskatchewan River and brick by brick, we've crafted a place where ingenuity grows, good ideas thrive, and people prosper.
A place where tradition meets innovation.
Where the spirit of the prairies collides with the drive for future progress.
Where the days run longer, the sun shines brighter, and the air feels warmer.
We're not just another city; we're Medicine Hat.
Ours is a different kind of energy.

by RFB, almost 2 years agoFor me, Medicine Hat has been the only place I have lived that has felt like home. Moving back to the Hat with two young children in tow almost 17 years ago was one of the best decisions I have made as it is the perfect place to raise a family. I love hitting the trails and enjoying the beautiful parks. It's fun to paddle the river or one of the many lakes in the area. Why we choose to retire to the city of Medicine Hat
by ronald, almost 2 years agoAll,
My wife and I had never been to Medicine Hat.
As we approached retirement, my wife and I looked at Vancouver Island - Nanaimo to retire at.
But soon realized we could not afford Nanaimo as it was way to expensive.
Good friends of ours who lived in Medicine Hat for many years, highly recommended we look at Medicine Hat for retirement.
Our friends called Medicine Hat a "Hidden Gem"!

Our friends called Medicine Hat a "Hidden Gem"!
After visiting Medicine Hat twice, my wife and I decided that this city was a perfect size with a population of 63,000.In Calgary, our FIVE surrounding NW communities had a population of 75,000.
During our two visits we noticed the following:
- We liked the smaller city. Compared Calgary's population of 1.4 Million.
- How friendly and welcoming the HATTERS were and are.
- So much less traffic and no rush hour traffic to speak of as compared to Calgary.
- Quieter place where you can hear the birds sing.
Our retirement move to Medicine Hat:
On June 1st, 2023, we took possession of our semi-attached bungalow in a 50+ community off Carry Drive SE
.
June 1st, 2024, it will already make ONE YEAR since we retired in Medicine Hat. We don not miss Calgary.
In closing, our friends were so right: saying Medicine Hat is a "Hidden Gem “
This is a smaller city has ALL the amenities.
There is so MUCH History here and the surrounding area!
July 2024, my sister and my 2 nieces are coming to visit us the first week of July. They too have never been to Medicine Hat. We have must see outings to show them.
My wife and I believe we have literally: Pulled a RABBIT out of THE HAT, by having retired here!
Regards,
Ron and Deb Guenette

I love the trails that are carefully maintained by the city and we love kayaking the river. I love walking to work across the bridge. It's nice to see wildlife. We've seen porcupines, pilated woodpeckers, baby skunks, raccoons, blue jays, pelicans, great blue herons and bald eagles. So much to see and do! People are mostly friendly everywhere we go. We have a fantastic Medicine Hat Public Library with a view of the river. You can get from one side of town to the other in 15 minutes. We're close to beautiful natural areas like Police Point and Echodale, Writing on Stone and Elkwater. The events and music festivals that we have in Medicine Hat are superb. I love Medicine Hat and know it's a wonderful place to live and raise children. It's so great that the hot air balloon festival is coming back for the third year in a row. What a nice magical thing for Medicine Hat.

by Arlene, almost 2 years agoWe moved to the Hat from Calgary four years ago. The lifestyle here is much better. The Esplanade has excellent concerts and events. The historic downtown is charming and the river walking paths and bike trails are exceptional.
No road rage and overstressed people here. Friendly neighbours who immediately made us welcome. You can chat with a stranger here and cars will wait to let you cross the road. All the fresh farm produce and local meat is amazing too. No other small city in Alberta can match the beauty of our deep river valley and coulees. Medicine Hat truly... Continue reading

by AA, almost 2 years agoI love Medicine Hat for so many reasons. The hearts of people here are generous and kind. The community support is incredible! So many small and big businesses support local events, sports teams or food banks. Everyone is always willing to give a helping hand. Aside from the amazing people, the trail systems are scattered throughout the city, making it a fun adventure to go explore different areas. if you’re not into trails, there are lakes close by or you can explore down by the river. Not only do they have delicious drinks but also make tasteful food!
we are called the sunniest city in Canada for a reason, not only because the sun shines most but the people also make it brighter. -

Different In The BEST Ways
by Bobbijogrunewald, almost 2 years agoThere are many kinds of different energy out there and we have experienced several of them with our little family. Having grown up in Calgary, to going to school in Regina, and now making Medicine Hat our home for the last 10 years, we can say that there is a tangible difference in the energy of the Sun City.

The first thing we noticed were the smiles. Smiles galore, everywhere we looked. And surprisingly people were smiling our way! Then were the happy greetings from people on the many waking paths, from the friendly faces at the local markets or in the historic downtown, and in every business we entered into.
It is easy to see how happy the residents of Medicine Hat are to be here.
Every school our four children have attended here felt more like an extended family than faceless organizations. I felt great sending my daughters off to school each day knowing the staff at the schools were supporting their efforts as students, and ours as their parents. What has impressed me most has been bearing witness of a community coming together quickly and collectively when hard times have happened. Neighbors standing shoulder to shoulder throwing down sand bags to hold back flood waters, or faith groups working side by side to clean up a farmers field after a tornado blew through, to the entire city offering up food donations in huge food drives when our Root Cellar community kitchen needed support.
I have learned, living here for over ten years now, that there is a different energy in Medicine Hat and it’s an energy full of heart, hope, and happiness. It’s an energy I want my children and grandchildren to experience in their lives. The energy of a place matters as it is a reflection of the lives being lived there. And the energy in Sun City is bright! -

by bap, about 2 years agoMoving a family is always a challenge, but moving them from the Gulf Coast to Canada, sight unseen in the midst of Covid? Yes, we may have had our sanity questioned a bit, but it's been one of the best decisions we ever made. It's a great place to raise a family between the schools, the parks, recreational paths, paddling down the river, the accessibility to Elkwater and the Rockies and more. The people are great, and while it has the small-town charm it also has all of the essentials you need covered. There's also the part of getting to... Continue reading

Hidden Gem - Fabulous Trail System
by Courtney Smart , about 2 years ago
Medicine Hat is an amazing city with a fantastic trail system and gorgeous downtown. I feel so blessed to be living in one of the older neighbourhoods, Riverside. Walking into downtown, crossing our historic Finlay bridge, into one of our fabulous coffee shops, The Station, is one of my favourite things to do. If you like to walk, run, or cycle you’ll fall in love. For pet lovers, you have many off leash areas and places to take your 4 legged friends. Looking to meet some great people, check out parkrun / parkwalk in Strathcona Island Park.

Parks, paths, & sunshine
by Fudd18, about 2 years agoLove being able to drive or walk a short distance to get onto one of the amazing paths in the city. Living in the river flats, it’s an easy walk to get to Strathcona Park. Walking along the river and on the berm is mind clearing and peaceful. You never know what’s happening down there. You could see handfuls of deer, people fishing, family’s having a nice fire/picnic cookout. In the summer you can even walk by and catch a brief moment of the Mavericks game or even some little league baseball going on at the same time. Just a... Medicine Hat has a #differentkindofenergy than anywhere else. From local sports teams and support, music and performance, restaurants and things to do, and just the best schools and teachers. We have amazing support from these groups and am so happy to now have businesses across numerous sectors, all based in Medicine Hat!
I created TruMe Whole Health and have the best support anywhere right here in Medicine Hat with a dozen different retailers of the products. I give back to the community in donations, sponsorships and fundraisers, just as we did with Redcliff Pharmasave for 20 years! Our kids have been successful in soccer, football and basketball and this had created some amazing connections between Med Hat High School, Medicine Hat Soccer, Medicine Hat Christian School, Badlands Basketball, and beyond!
My initials are even the same! Talk about MH!! #differentkindofenergy
We love Medicine Hat, we love the people, we love the businesses and the culture. We love our sports here, we love our friends and colleagues and support from the community. We couldn't imagine life anywhere else!
