Trees add a natural barrier to what will be the location of the new playground.

This playground is a destination play space for families, friends, the community and visitors to our city. We’ve engaged with the community to determine what is the best concept for a new play structure that meets the needs and desires of the community and aligns with best practice, while still considering the budget and site considerations that are in place.

We engaged the City of Medicine Hat’s Working Group on Accessibility and Inclusion (WGAI) as well as Medicine Hat Adaptive Sport and have completed extensive research around industry best practices.

Project Background

The new structure will be built closer to the facility entrance, surrounded by trees which offer natural protection from the sun and wind. The playground will be accessible to children of all ages and abilities, while offering a new way to play and explore. The new structure will incorporate features that align with our Playground Management Plan that was created in consultation with the community. This document, available for download in the documents tab, highlights the community’s desire for different styles of playgrounds, including adventure and natural-style play structures.

The ship-style structure was removed in 2021 to accommodate construction of the multi-court pickleball facility and will be relocated to another area within the city.

Survey Says

The survey results from May helped us determine the play structure concept. The decision was weighted as follows:

Survey Results: 40%
Research / best practices: 30%
Contributions from community stakeholders: 20%
Feedback from subject matter experts: 10%

Playground Construction Complete

The brand new playground is now complete and ready for public enjoyment! Read the full release here: https://www.medicinehat.ca/en/news/new-playground-at-big-marble-go-centre-now-open.aspx
