Medicine Hat, it’s time to Name the Fleet!

The Municipal Works Department has 15 vehicles in their snow and ice control fleet waiting to be named! The chosen names will be displayed on the vehicles for the winter season.

The submission window has closed and the voting period is now live.

The purpose of this contest is not only to bring some camaraderie and cheer to this cold-weather service, but also to raise awareness and educate residents on the City's snow and ice control program.

About the Snow and Ice Control program:

The City of Medicine Hat maintains over 670 km of roads and lanes. The City's snow and ice control program is an essential service to permit safe and efficient travel for vehicles during winter months. The snow and ice control program is initiated based on the amount of snowfall received:

  • Less than 5 cm of snowfall: Roads will be maintained as required.
  • Between 5 to 10 cm of snowfall: Category System in effect with defined time frames.
  • More than 10 cm of snowfall: Category System is in effect with potentially extended time frames.

Roads are addressed based on three categories:

Category 1 - Within 24 hours after snowfall ends:

  • Emergency routes (hospital, ambulance, police fire)
  • Arterial roadways
  • Hills and bridges
  • Highways (Holsom Road and Highway 41A)

Category 2 - Within 24 hours after Category 1 completion:

Note: During blizzards or long, continuous snowfalls, Category 1 routes may be cleared many times before Category 2 routes begin.

  • Collector roadways
  • School zones
  • Transit bus routes
  • Central business district (downtown)

Category 3 - No prescribed timeframe:

Note: we ensure Category 3 roads are passable for emergency response vehicles

  • Residential roads
  • Lanes and alleys

Route Priority Map: Located in the documents section on the right side of this page.
