Medicine Hat. Alberta.
There's a spirit here that's hard to explain. Unmistakable when experienced.
At the heart of our community lies a different kind of energy, a pulse that sets us apart and makes us PROUD to be Hatters.
Ours is a community that is built differently.
Our resolve is carved from the banks of the South Saskatchewan River and brick by brick, we've crafted a place where ingenuity grows, good ideas thrive, and people prosper.
A place where tradition meets innovation.
Where the spirit of the prairies collides with the drive for future progress.
Where the days run longer, the sun shines brighter, and the air feels warmer.

We're not just another city; we're Medicine Hat.
Ours is a different kind of energy.

    Life Energy

If you look up the definition of Energy, it comes up with many definitions. None of them really define the kind of Energy that describes Medicine Hat.

Living in Medicine Hat seems to have its own kind of energy. What I have experienced by living here for over 30 years is….

Physical energy: Medicine Hat is a very active community that caters to the health and wellness of all its’ citizens. I feel blessed that we have many opportunities to participate in team sports, clubs, family, group and individual activities as well as great facilities to watch exciting sports events... Living in Medicine Hat seems to have its own kind of energy. What I have experienced by living here for over 30 years is….

Physical energy: Medicine Hat is a very active community that caters to the health and wellness of all its’ citizens. I feel blessed that we have many opportunities to participate in team sports, clubs, family, group and individual activities as well as great facilities to watch exciting sports events. This community supports and fosters budding athletes who want to push for greater achievements. I love that we have produced many athletes who made their way into professional sports careers. Yearly our community honours athletes that have grown up here and achieved great things by recognizing them on our sports wall of fame. The future dreams of young and old are always supported.

Creative energy: Medicine Hat has a variety of uniquely talented musicians, actors, artists, photographers, writers, designers, builders, and entrepreneurs. We are known for our Festivals like Jazzfest, Tongue on the Post Folk Music festival and Quonset Days. Local entertainers share their amazing talent at more intimate locations all around the city. Other entertainers from all over the world grace us with performances at various places around the city including our big events centres like Co-op Place & the Esplanade. Medicine Hat is a magnet for people who want to share their music. As for our local artists, we acknowledge them by displaying art around the city in cafes, art studios, at Medalta, in parks, on the streets and buildings for our own enjoyment. We celebrate our very gifted photographers and other media artists that create inspiring works of art. We are lucky to have some very creative clothing designers. We enjoy Markets that feature people who create very impressive crafts, tantalizing food and provide the freshest produce at many locations around the city. There are numerous entrepreneurs that delight us with their remarkable skills of making unique ice cream flavors, craft beer, gin, etc. Medicine Hat offers abundant opportunities for creativity. If there is something worth celebrating, you can be sure Medicine Hat will step up and make it available for all to enjoy.

Cultural energy: You wouldn’t even have to leave Medicine Hat to travel the world as we have such a diversity of cultures here. You can enjoy a variety of events put on by different ethic groups such as Indigenous celebrations, Cinco De Mayo, Diwali, salsa dancing, etc. Ethnic restaurants share delicious food recipes from their own countries. Just getting the opportunity to meet new people expands my world. Medicine Hat also honours its own local history with special attractions like Medicine Hat Tourism trolley tours and other tours that highlight our community, past and present. Our Library is a place that doesn’t just lend books. It is also involved in serving our community through various programs designed for all ages. The best part is that most of it is free because many citizens and corporations of Medicine Hat generously donate funds to create a community experience through the library.

Gravitational energy: People who are looking at moving to our fair city love the small town vibe but enjoy the fact that we are a progressive community. They say things like “We were just drawn to this place with its sunny skies, warm friendly people, the diversity of things available to enhance our families lives and the feeling of being home”. There is a strong pull for people to come live in Medicine Hat. I felt that pull when I moved here.

Emotional energy: People here seem to come together for anyone in need. They have hearts of gold in this city. People living here open their hearts by donating their time or money to those in need. You can feel the determination to make this city great through volunteerism and donations. They also support kindness and wellness to animals. No cause is too little or too big for our citizens to tackle. I love that you can walk down the street, and someone will smile and say hi. They care about each other, and they don’t even have to know you. I am very proud of this.

Life energy: Medicine Hat thrives on community filled with family, friends, hopes, dreams, hardships and making peoples lives more meaningful. We excel at being a great place to live by being creative, physical, cultural, gravitation and emotional. To me that is Life energy and that’s a different kind of energy. That is why I love living here.

Growing up in Medicine Hat, I have never thought “I can’t wait to leave”. Every unique season provides an opportunity to be awed by our surroundings. It’s hard not to want to get out and enjoy the parks and paths that Medicine Hat has to offer. Community blossoms in Medicine Hat. There’s a place for like-minded people of all kinds. I love the energy of Medicine Hat because it is a friendly city and ideal for young families. What other city has no problem getting volunteers for events Medicine Hat is such a great place to live there are beautiful parks and trails and so many wonderful things to do and places to go . We moved here in 2012, and Medicine Hat had a quaint charm about it. It included a downtown, a beautiful park, a shopping mall, and locals strolling the paths. Over the years, downtown is more active than ever with coffee shops, specialty stores, and a variety of ethnic restaurants. Tourism has actively promoted hundreds of arts and culture events, festivals, concerts, and diverse activities to capture the interests of locals and abroad. Investment by businesses and by Hatters to support locally, creates a win-win environment for all. Hatters have a choice. They can make things happen, or watch things happen, or just say “what just happened”? Whatever group you’re in, Medicine Hat is where you can easily become a part of the community. Change is happening, be a part of it.

    Best place to

    Live in Alberta!
I arrived in Medicine Hat on December 4, 1974 from England. I love Medicine Hat immediately and always feel like I am coming home whenever I leave on Vacation. I feel safe and happy here and always have. I love all the community events and attend everything I can. When others move away, they always come back. This is my home and always will be. I am so happy here.

I have spent my life moving every few years, unable to find somewhere where I really felt at home. Until I moved to Medicine Hat in 2021. I am so grateful that life's adventures brought me here! I love the historic downtown, the enchanting coulees, and the unique artistic vibe the Hat has. One of my favourite things to do is walk along the river and go to the public library. I really believe there is something for everyone here!

    Medicine Hat Makes Me Happy!

by Shelley Acheson, almost 2 years ago

According to Dan Buettner from “Blue Zones”, there is a correlation between being Happy and Living Longer, it therefore stands to reason that most people want to live where they can be the happiest. There is a growing trend (especially since the pandemic) of people moving to where they can live happily.

Some contributing factors to a place being “Happy” are:

Trust – Trustworthy police, politicians, and neighbors

Walkability – Multi use trails to facilitate physical activity and socializing.

Access to Nature – A proximity to parks, open spaces, and trees.

Clean Environment – Clean water, air, and land.

Healthful Food – Farmer’s Markets, Greenhouses & Local Restaurants.

Healthy Behaviours – Promote a healthy lifestyle (walking, cycling, running, pickleball, kayaking). Restrictions on smoking, encourage less obesity & drug abuse.

Medicine Hat already enjoys many of these features and by adding the right policies and programs, a higher and happier quality of life can be achieved. Wouldn’t it be great if we could promote Medicine Hat as not only the sunniest City in Canada but also the Happiest!

I moved to a near by small town as a young child from the big city of Calgary. My parents wanted better for us. We stayed in the small town until I was a teenager snd needed more, and Medicine Hat became more then just a trip to town for groceries. I started living on my own young. Working a couple jobs, not driving, this safe smaller city gave me the ability to walk everywhere without feeling scared. I met my husband here, and so even though my entire family lives elsewhere I stayed. We started businesses, made carreers, had our kids here and continue to stay here because this place is home it's a safe smaller city for our kids to grow in. Its close enough to those small towns and farm land to make them feel real roots to their home.

It's a small enough city that word of mouth is still a thing and therefor helps our businesses thrive.

    It's home.

Where can you find a place that has a touch of authenticity homemade and dash of city electric energy!? Medicine Hat.

A hometown is one thing you can never replace no Matter where you travel. You find yourself comparing the littlest things to what you grew up knowing. It touches a place in our roots like our very souls are connected to its places. I’ve moved twice away for very short times because no place is like home; now 34 years have I lived here. Watching everything coming alive more than ever before. Watched mom and pa shops be passed down to their children, watched our parks go from old wooden sliver reminders to newly renovated tire alongside new designs. Spider webs, flowers, all sorts of wonderful places for children to play upon. It really does the heart good to get a dose of Medicine from their homeTown and the best kind of Medicine is Love and Pride. This might have been where the Medicine Hat Man lost his hat but it’s where my family and I call home. Its natural remedies can be found with wonderful events like the markets, amazing shows at the esplande, art shows at the cultural centre, Our beautiful library always is embracing new adventures just this year they had a lion dance! How cool then you have Medicine Hat theatre productions and let’s not forget rise up and spectrum. Always amazing to behold a Medicine Hat Event. Remedy for sunshine is found on the trolley that adventures across our city, on the biking trails that lead you to all parts of our home my favourite being kin coulee to strathcona. Floating down the river also is an awe to behold you get so many waves from the people walking our sidewalks and paths. The new places to try out local talent can be found in little festivals that so many hard workers put their love into. Comic con, craft brew nights, food trucks under our teepee or in the park, rattler run, Easter egg hunt, always something new is stirring and I’m proud to be apart of it all. I did not script this I just thought of all Medicine Hat is and realized I could go on. Don’t you agree with how much our city is growing it also helps breath a life giving force into your daily plans!? I mean it really is the Medicine we need to keep from all the other stresses in our world and this weekend I think I’ll take my family on a walk through our parks for their weekly dose. Until later reader and thank you for your time. See you on the trails

I knew how beautiful medicine hat was, I loved the sense of community, and all the things the city did for its people. Yet, I still felt I needed to explore and spread my wings. I moved to Airdrie/Calgary area for two years, it was so different from Medicine Hat, it felt so cold in comparison. I then moved all the way to St. Louis. Living in the USA was such an eye opening experience of just how amazing we have it in our country. I was proud to be Canadian my whole life but even more proud to be Canadian after 1 year od living in the USA. Finally, I moved to Edmonton. It was a beautiful city with wonderful job opportunities, but it still always felt like something was missing. After the birth of my daughter, the light of my life, it was time to move home. I felt like I had seen all I needed to and I know where my heart wanted and needed to be to raise my daughter. Since being home everything has felt so complete. The air in clearer here, you can lay out and stargaze and cuddle with the ones you love. So many beautiful and well taken care of parks and trails. I love taking my daughter out walking almost every day. The kindest people with the best sense of community I could ever imagine. So many people here have shown my child so much care and love, that means more to me then I will ever be able to say. Medicine hat is everything to me. I walked down many broken roads in life, and all of them led me straight back to home. I am so proud to be raising my child here. Thank you Medicine Hat for always being my home.
