What is the Intermunicipal Development Plan (IDP)?
The Tri Area IDP establishes a regional framework for attracting and coordinating economic opportunities and managing land use, subdivision and development in the IDP area. Some of the items addressed by an IDP include:
Future land uses
Provision for transportation and infrastructure systems and services
Environmental matters
Policies within the Tri Area IDP must align with other plans, including the geographically larger South Saskatchewan Regional Plan and Municipal Development Plans.
Why do we need an IDP, and update?
The Municipal Government Act requires that municipalities in Alberta which share common boundaries must adopt an IDP. The most recent Tri Area IDP amendments were completed and passed by each of the three Councils in 2020. Such plans are not intended to be static documents and require periodic reviews and updates to reflect continually evolving conditions. Over time, regional conditions may change, such as:
Demographics / growth rates
Economic development opportunities
Infrastructure services
Taking consideration for these and other changes ensures that the IDP remains current and relevant. To this end, the current update proposes several amendments to the Tri Area IDP.
