Stephen Palmer asked 27 days ago

Hi Stephen, thank you for taking the time to share your perspective and passion on this matter. We do acknowledge that you, along with a majority of Hatters, highly value recreational facilities and amenities. The Facilities for the Future initiative promotes a long-term vision of providing indoor and outdoor recreational facilities for this, and the next generation of residents. While many Hatters have this shared value, we all have varying perspectives on how this infrastructure should be funded. Ultimately, Council will direct whether future projects are funded through borrowing, grants, reserves, or a combination of these. Also keep in mind that we not only need to fund the construction of the new facilities, but we also need to ensure we can afford the long-term operational costs - which are typically funded only by tax revenue. Council will make these financial decisions considering the feedback received through public engagement. We encourage you to stay involved through upcoming engagement activities as projects are realized. We hope this helps to clarify.

  • Share Why an outdoor pool instead of indoor which is only usable for a few months out of the year. I am also a senior on fixed income and can not afford to pay taxes more because of this venture. I feel it is a huge waste of taxpayer monies. on Facebook Share Why an outdoor pool instead of indoor which is only usable for a few months out of the year. Carolyn asked about 1 month ago

Thanks for the question Carolyn! The Facilities for the Future initiative includes a number of different future initiatives, one being the proposed outdoor pool experience and another being a future indoor recreation centre. The intent of the program is to ensure a variety of recreation opportunities - both indoors and outdoors - are available to meet resident needs. Ideally, as projects are advanced, funding and operation partners are discovered that will help offset the impact that new projects may have on taxes. We hope that helps to clarify.

Randy asked about 1 month ago

Thanks for the question Randy! While the proposed site has a large frontage along Southlands Dr. SE, the intention is to have the primary access to the site coming off 13th Ave. to the west with a new access driveway / road, through one of the existing parcels between this site and 13th Ave. 13th Ave. can better handle added traffic volume that this project is likely to create and is a more direct access road for those travelling from the north or south. We hope that helps to clarify.
