The City is embarking on a long-term initiative to introduce new indoor and outdoor recreational facilities. Additionally, we are evaluating current facilities that are either outdated or no longer align with the City's goals. These may be renovated, repurposed, sold, or entered into new partnership agreements.

In August 2023, City Council approved the 'Facilities for the Future' report. This report discussed previous community feedback, facility usage data, costs, and the progress on recreational facilities in the last two years. The City’s primary goal is to decide the best path forward for recreational services that benefit all residents. This involves:

  • Engaging the Public: We want to ensure the community confirms the direction of our plans.
  • Building Partnerships: Teaming up with both government and private groups to fund and manage new recreational spots.
  • Expert Planning: Hiring subject matter experts for initial planning, designs, and feasibility studies.
  • City Involvement: Utilizing City staff for the project and hiring external firms when needed.
  • Decision Framework: Creating a clear plan for new constructions, renovations, and closures of facilities.
  • Optimizing Decommissioned Sites: Analyzing old sites to determine their best use and value.
  • Managing Designs and Construction: Overseeing the creation of new places and the closure of old ones.
  • Operational Plans: Setting up systems and partnerships to efficiently run these facilities once they're open.

Throughout all this, the City is committed to the core values of the 'Facilities for the Future' initiative, which emphasize a balance of economic, health, social, and environmental factors.
