What is the East Ring Enhancement Project?

The City of Medicine Hat is actively preparing for growth and demand for electrical energy. To prepare for this growth, the city plans to enhance its current eastern transmission system.

This plan involves making existing structures stronger and moving transmission lines if needed. These actions will help the city be well-prepared for future growth by increasing the line capacity from 69 kilovolts (kV) to 138 kV.

Project Alternatives - Considering the Options

We have reached the next stage in the project where we are evaluating alternative scenarios for the transmission line. Each scenario presents different options for the poles, either changing the height or relocating them. Descriptions of each scenario are included in the Project Newsletter and described in each of the sections below.

Working with the community is essential for us to determine what scenarios should be submitted for regulatory approval.

    February 2024 Update

The City of Medicine Hat continues through the route determination process for the East Ring Enhancement Project. The review of the feedback, evaluation of metrics, development of materials, and engineering/design has taken longer than anticipated. However, please rest assured that our team continues to work towards routing decisions. We anticipate being back out to the community this spring.

We are committed to keeping you informed and we will continue to provide updates as new information becomes available.

The East Ring Enhancement Project team continues to gather feedback and go through the information collected prior to making decisions regarding potential routing options, engagement activities, and regulatory filings. We anticipate sharing these decisions in February 2024 and will discuss with community members before any filing is undertaken with the Alberta Utilities Commission.

The EREP Alternative Scenario survey closed January 16, 2024 – although closed for input, team members remain available through email and phone to document feedback and answer any questions.

We will continue to keep you informed as new information becomes available.

    Thank you again for participating!

Thank you to all those who have taken the time so far to participate in the East Ring Enhancement Project’s engagement process. We continue to collect feedback and answer questions from those along the 24 km of transmission line looking to be enhanced.

Our team is reviewing everything that has been received from the in-person events, phone, email, and through the project website. What has been received will be considered by the project team as we continue to move forward with the project. The various disciplines including project management, engagement, environment, planning, and engineering will be working through all the information and questions received and will be back out to the community in 2024 when options have been narrowed for each of the Project areas.

Our team remains available to you. We will be taking some time over the holiday season and response times may be longer for our team to get back to you.

The City of Medicine Hat wishes everyone a happy holiday season and all the best in 2024!
