What is a Land Use Bylaw?
A Land Use Bylaw controls development by categorizing all properties in a city into various land use districts. It governs what may occur (land use) on every piece of property, and establishes a system for issuing development permits.
Why do we need it? A Land Use Bylaw is one of the most important sets of regulations that a municipality has. It is a tool to help ensure that ongoing development is well aligned with a city's overall vision. The Municipal Government Act requires each Alberta municipality to have its own Land Use Bylaw.
Why is a refresh being done?
Our current Land Use Bylaw (#4168) was drafted in 2013, with several revisions occurring over the past nine years. To better serve the Medicine Hat community of today, a new Land Use Bylaw is currently being written.
Feedback from Hatters is an important element in creating our new Land Use Bylaw. __
