Urban Hens in Medicine Hat
The City of Medicine Hat is exploring whether to allow residents to keep a small number of hens (female chickens) on single-family residential properties for personal egg production.
In Alberta municipalities where urban hens are allowed, programs are typically regulated through municipal bylaws. These bylaws commonly limit the number of hens per property (generally 2-6 hens), prohibit roosters, require hens to be kept in secure coops and enclosed runs, and set standards to address animal welfare, sanitation, and nuisance impacts such as odour or pests. Enforcement is generally complaint‑based and aligned with existing municipal regulations.
Urban hen programs exist in some Alberta municipalities, while others have chosen not to allow them. Your feedback will help City Council better understand community perspectives before a decision is made.
